2 Hours 45 Minutes, the second installation in the trilogy In Search of Home, uses photography and sound to create a private experience of the distance between my doorstep in Martinsburg, West Virginia, and my partner’s doorstep in Richmond, Virginia. The images are true to scale and each mounted on a low platform, forcing viewers to step onto the image to hear the associated sound recording through headphones suspended from the ceiling. For each recording, the car radio was set to scan automatically, playing a few seconds of every station received at that location. The recordings were edited to remove any identifying evidence of place. The subtle difference between them leads viewers to question how our sense of a given place is constructed. The two platforms are positioned side by side, drawing attention to the gap between the images, leaving only the distance between as the remembered experience.
