Apartment B, the third and final installation in the trilogy In Search of Home, explores what constitutes a “home” through the depiction of an individual experience of place and the intricate relationship between image and sound in regard to one’s memories. The installation consists of nine images, each representing a different room in my apartment. The images are true to scale and portray both a general memory and a specific moment in time, blurring the lines between the general and the specific, truth and fiction, and past and present. Of the nine images, one is hanging on a wall, two are leaning against a wall, and six are each mounted on a low platform, forcing viewers to step onto the image to hear the associated sound recording through headphones suspended from the ceiling. Over several months, everyday experiences within each room were documented through binaural recording to replicate sound three-dimensionally and mimic a first-person perspective. The audio was then fragmented and collaged to create a collective response, depicting an experience for viewers that is both unique and shared.
